Welcome to our world of discovery and learning!

Welcome to our daily blog! We use it to share daily updates on our classroom, reflections on our learning with children, and photographs. Extended family, friends, neighbors, educators, etc, are also encouraged to follow the blog!
One of the wonderful aspects of blogging is that it allows real-time interaction between home and school. Is your child talking about what we are doing in school? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you interested (or even an expert!) in something we are studying? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you planning an outing with your child to extend the classroom learning? Leave us a comment and invite other families along!
We also have a section call, "Learn More About..." When we write each post, we tag it with relevant topics. And so if you wanted to see what we have been doing with, for instance, science, you would click on that tag, and see all the posts about science.

Slap-A-Da-Bass, and other Art Forms

Today, we took a visit to Jason's Music Room. He had a special surprise waiting for us there! To get us ready for the Buster Williams visit at the end of January, Jason introduced us to an upright bass! The instrument is well over 5 feet tall and hulks over our Owls, but they were so excited to see it! Jason explained a bit about how it's played, and then gave each friend a chance to try it. Mike, who also plays bass, got to share with the Owls too.

Jason also shared with us The Jazz Fly by Matthew Gollub, which is a story that is accompanied by an audio CD of the author narrating, well, more like scatting the words to the book!
Since it was a very dreary day outside, the Owls broke up into small groups and went for an art walk, taking in the beautiful creations in our larger community. We visited the exhibit outside the Muller Auditorium, which features the work of the late Prince Twins Seven-Seven, a Nigerian modernist. We also ventured into Middle and Upper School, where wonderful works of art are constantly being produced. Owls brought along clipboards to draw their representations of what they were seeing and other things that they felt inspired to render.

A few friends played Uno, which is a wonderful card game that asks players to notice the details of the card and make associations with a card that they hold in their hand. For example, if a red 7 card is on the table, the player would need to put down either a red card or a 7 card from their hand. The educational benefits of this game are wonderful, from number and color recognition, to practicing comparison and association skills, to practicing cooperation and rule-following skills.

We also visited Chris in the cafeteria, and acquired ingredients to make the the mix for new play dough for our room!
