This morning we paid a special visit to our friend Jason, the Lower School music teacher, to begin our first round of experiences with resources. Jason welcomed us into the beautiful music room, and gathered in circle to sing "Say Hello" to us. He taught us different ways of using our voices-high, low, loud, soft, talking, and singing. He also showed us and passed around a mystery item wrapped in scarves, and asked the Owls to guess what might might be hidden. Guesses included a stick, a trumpet, a tuba, many scarves, and more. It turned out to be a slide whistle, and the Owls enjoyed copying the varied sounds and notes made by the whistle.
The Owls also noticed that scarecrows had been put up all around the front of our campus because of yesterday's Lower School scarecrow making, which friends get to partake starting in Kindergarten. We decided to split up into small groups and go for a scarecrow walk to observe the creations further. We noticed the different materials and objects used (bear nose? scarecrow mustache?).
Outside, friends noticed that we got a new platform to play on that was built yesterday. Kristin and friends started lining up blocks, and used round tree cookies to roll across the platform to knock down the set up blocks. When asked what they were doing, they quickly responded, "Bowling!" From a teacher perspective, one of the most fascinating things about working with this age group is the creativity and inventiveness of each of them, and this is a perfect example of this. The platform was built with the intention and idea of a stage in mind, and clearly the Owls had different ideas.
Tamara was feeling under the weather today, so we made the best of the situation by continuing our letter writing interest and wrote her some get well letters. We also got to spend time with our new friend Barbara, who is one of the wonderful substitutes for AFS.
