Welcome to our world of discovery and learning!

Welcome to our daily blog! We use it to share daily updates on our classroom, reflections on our learning with children, and photographs. Extended family, friends, neighbors, educators, etc, are also encouraged to follow the blog!
One of the wonderful aspects of blogging is that it allows real-time interaction between home and school. Is your child talking about what we are doing in school? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you interested (or even an expert!) in something we are studying? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you planning an outing with your child to extend the classroom learning? Leave us a comment and invite other families along!
We also have a section call, "Learn More About..." When we write each post, we tag it with relevant topics. And so if you wanted to see what we have been doing with, for instance, science, you would click on that tag, and see all the posts about science.

It's Just For Love

Today is Wednesday, February 13th, which means that tomorrow is Valentine's Day! At morning meeting today, we opened up a brief discussion on what tomorrow is, and we got a variety of answers. Many friends focused their sharing on the fact that cards (and other treats) are being brought for the community, and Caimin put in, "It's just for love."
It was clear that there was an excitement about sharing cards tomorrow, so we decided to do some prep work. Since it is likely that many things will be brought in and distributed amongst our class, we took the mailboxes we made during our letter writing study and revamped them with Valentine's flair. Adding stickers, hearts, and drawing based around the theme of love, our boxes now await the delivery of cards tomorrow. The boxes will be sent home with all of their treasure.

In keeping with the theme of love, we also worked on cutting out hearts from paper. This is in fact very challenging for many preschoolers, since the heart is quite a complex shape. To lay down the line work, friends folded papers in half and used a half-heart tracer along the crease. Friends cut along the lines (another difficult task, since the heart has both curves and points) and unfolded the paper to see the heart!

Since First Grade is working very hard to push the post office and stamp-selling around the Lower School, the Owls took the chance to familiarize ourselves a little more with money. Four trays were set out-one for each kind of coin-and a pile of randomly assorted coins were left on a table. Friends carefully organized each coin into it's corresponding tray, noticing size differences and differences in detail.

*apologies for the lack of pictures today, we are experiencing technical difficulties with picasa*
