New Year Owls, New Discovery Owls

Welcome back, Owl relations! Happy, healthy New Year to all!
We settled back into the AFS routine very quickly by taking a trip right away to visit Jason, our music teacher, who introduced us to hand drums. We tried out the different ways to use the drums: exploring hard and soft palm hits, finger taps, circular and up-and-down rubs, and more. We also practiced following rhythms, first by drumming together in (relative) unison, and drumming to the rhythm of songs. We also watched a video clip of Buster Williams, who is a renowned jazz bass player, and who is coming to visit our school at the end of January! He is giving a special performance to Early Childhood, and we are certainly very excited!

Buster Williams!
We worked on some science experiments in our classroom, discovering what happens when you mix vinegar (that had a little color added to it) and baking soda. We'll spoil it for you-it bubbles! Not only was this an activity that taught about how things can change, creating chemical changes, but because the colors were incorporated, it became a color mixing activity as well.

We also became involved in various book-making, wooden train-playing, magnatiling, and big playgrounding. All in all, we are back in full swing!
